His photographs transform these seemingly mundane places into a visual poetry that delight and terrify, like a fairy tale might. Magical, mysterious, and mannered, his photographs of the landscape evoke moods and represent feelings. Kenna's photographs harken back to such visionaries as Eugene Atget, Alvin Langdon Coburn and Bill Brandt. But, his photographs speak directly to the 20th century conflict between the love of the natural landscape and the need for man to constantly place his mark upon it. This exhibition will feature photographs from the past twenty years of Michael Kenna's career. "His prints are exquisitely seductive, spiritual experiences, akin to poetry or music. They strike somber chords yet they contain a mystical light that is both wistful and luminous, a light that emanates from some mysterious source. They attract me in, even hypnotize me." -Ruth Bernhard Michael Kenna was born in 1953 in Lancashire, England. Educated in London, he moved to the United States in 1980. He has exhibited his photographs internationally and they are collected extensively by museums and private collectors.
