In 1938, he left Germany to live in Singapore and Australia before moving to Paris in 1961. Newton began to gain notoriety for his work in French Vogue: "Right through the sixties I did my utmost to push the sexiest fashion photos on [French Vogue]. I was fresh from the Australian bush, totally instinctively cutting against the terrible blandness of the time." - Helmut Newton Helmut Newton's photographs capture the imagination through his combination of elegance, eroticism, decadence, humor, and voyeurism. Newton has been described as a "genius of fantasy whereby the spectator is left with the desire to pursue the narrative, to complete the scenario." In the 1980's he became increasingly more involved with portraiture, much of it commissioned as editorial work for magazines. Newton makes himself an essential part of the expressive equation, doling out seduction and discipline in equal shares. But he has a crucial advantage: he induces his subjects to imagine themselves as fantasies seen through his eyes. Helmut Newton continues to reinvent himself, piquing our curiosity through his tempting and often shocking work. This special retrospective exhibition features 45 original photographs, including portraits of Jodie Foster, Andy Warhol, Debra Winger, fashion work for French Vogue and Vanity Fair, polaroids, life-size exhibition photographs, panoramas, and his usual array of fantasy images of glamorous models.
