He resided in New York City until his death in 1995.

Eisenstadt was a staff photographer for LIFE from 1936 - 1966. His photographs were featured on a total of 86 of the magazine's covers. He was a pioneer in the field of photojournalism.
Eisenstadt's nickname was "Eisie".
He received the National Medal of Arts in November 1989 for "extraordinary photographs that document the tragedies and triumphs he [had] witnessed over a lifetime".
