Sebastiao Salgado was born in 1944 on a farm in the rural state of Minas Gerias, Brazil.
He resides in Paris.
Known for:
Salgado, who describes his work as "militant photography," captures images of severe economic and social hardship. In his images of workers and migrants, he "bestows great dignity on the most isolated and neglected among us."

Did you know ... ?
Salgado was trained as an economist, and he did not begin working as a photojournalist until 1973.
He has donated many of his photographs to UNICEF.
Salgado has twice been named Photographer of the Year by the
International Center of Photography, New York.
