Paul Strand was born in New York City in 1890.
He died at his home in Orgeval, France in 1976.

Known for:
His photographs of "common subjects" such as the people of rural America and tough, vigorous images of New York City in the early 1900s. He is also known for some of his abstract images.

• After studying photography with social reformer, Lewis Hine, Strand became influenced by Alfred Stieglitz.
• Strand contributed several photogravures to Alfred Stieglitz's project,

His Platinum and Silver gelatin prints are signed, sometimes by his wife, Hazel.
